Maker House
Leytonstone, London
With our project 'Texture House', 'Maker House' forms a pair of rear extensions in East London with mirrored geometry but contrasting characters to suit each client's brief.
The extensions were built together by the same contractor which allowed both to gain floorspace, share materials and workforce, and create efficiencies on site to reduce waste. The paired forms create a rhythm across the rear of the connected terrace.
The existing Victorian house has retained much of its' original character and features which are complemented by the client's collection of handmade and vintage furniture. The ground floor extension forms a contrasting light-filled space with fine glazing to the rear garden and exposed white painted steel structure.
The new kitchen/dining area includes a bespoke-made plywood kitchen with dark blue desktop linoleum fronts and oak detailing, while the dining area features a bespoke designed and made shelving unit created by the client, to define the dining space and inject their character to the new addition. Outside, the warm timber cladding sits quietly within the existing mature garden.
