Arch House I

Herne Hill, London

Arch House I is a full home refurbishment and extension project in Herne Hill, London. Featuring brick arches, Crittal-style French doors, hit-and-miss brickwork and a vaulted roof, this contemporary yet sensitive addition to the double fronted Victorian house provides a large kitchen space, a key space for the client’s love of cooking and entertaining. The house was also extended into the loft space with mansard roof created much needed additional bedroom space for the client and their young family.

Site conditions played a role in creating visual interest, with both the floor and the ceiling expanding leading into the kitchen from the dining area. The single-storey side extension has given rise to a modern, broken-plan living space, highlighted by a generously high, top-lit vaulted room with garden terrace views. A custom sofa is designed to create a comfortable transition between the kitchen and dining room.

Internally, throughout the house the original features have been retained and celebrated, with original fireplaces and flooring refinished. Colour has played a key role in creating distinctive zones for socialising, relaxing, playing and working, with spaces decorated using warm, inviting tones of pinks, ochres and greens.
